What is cupping massage and what is it good for?

Cupping massage is becoming more common for people with tight muscles, a stiff back or tension in the neck and shoulders. But what exactly is cupping, and when can it be a helpful addition to massage?

With cupping, special cups are placed on the skin. Light to firm suction creates space in the tissue. Where regular massage mainly works with pressure, cupping works with a pulling movement. It often feels more intense, but also very focused.

What does cupping do?

The suction lifts the skin, connective tissue and deeper layers slightly. Many people experience this as a deep stimulus in areas where tension has been present for a long time, such as the upper back, shoulders, neck or lower back.

Cupping is often chosen for a stuck feeling in the neck, shoulders or back, tired muscles, tension from desk work or stress, or when certain areas do not seem to release with regular massage.

Is cupping painful?

Cupping can feel sensitive, especially where there is a lot of tension. It should not become unnecessarily sharp or painful. The intensity is adjusted during the treatment: it is better to build up calmly than to do too much.

After cupping, round red, purple or darker marks can appear. These are visible skin and circulation responses to the cup and usually fade within a few days to about two weeks.

What is cupping good for?

Many people choose cupping when they want more depth than a classic relaxation massage. It can help you become more aware of where your body holds tension and give areas that feel “stuck” more space.
